Mammoth round of 125 for Jimmy

MARPLE Golf Club profession­al Jimmy Lister, who began his golf as junior at Denton and completed his PGA course there then enjoying being the profession­al at Oldham GC before moving to his present post at Marple.

Along with the members, Jimmy has enjoyed taking a full part in the club’s 125th year anniversar­y celebratio­ns.

Jimmy decided to celebrate the anniversar­y by playing 125 holes in a single day and to also raise money for the British Heart Foundation.

Jimmy said: “I started at 4.30am and finished just after 5pm and although I recorded a few of my early scores it didn’t last throughout the day.

“I would like to thank the Captain and all of the club members for their support, caddying, ball spotting etc and for all of their donations. It became quite painful as the day went on with very sore feet, aching back and muscles toward the end of the challenge but I was delighted to complete it so quickly and I will soon recover.”

Captain’s Day at Marple was a family affair as Robert Vaisey led in with 63 from Jonathan Vaisey 64 and Jeff Crowder 65.

A Junior Stableford at Marple had Daniel Hinds in full control with 41 points from Kieren Mathieson 33 and Henry Beischer 32.

Medal action for Marple’s men had division one topped by Jay Hayes 64 from Raymond McPhee 67, Gordon Mutch 68 and Stephen White 69.

In division two Jonathan Vaisey kept up his hot run winning with 63, well clear of Walter Derry 66 and Mike Field 68.

The Centenary medal for Bramall Park’s men had a close finish with a cpo on 66 going in favour of Peter Robinson from Paul Feltham and Niall Curwen and just a shot back were Roy Duncan and Alan Wood.

Park’s ladies also played for their Centenary Trophy in a pairs medal and it was won by J Wheatley and L Hunter with 70.0 from Fiona Kelsall and S Souter 73.0 and Sue Flitt and J Cowan 73.6.

It was also Centenary medal time for Bramhall’s men and in division one Stuart Smith squeezed home with his 69 seeing him a shot clear from Colin Carter, Philip Evans, David Eadsforth, Lewis Meston and Bob Eastwood.

Division two top spot was taken by Aleck Copeland with his 68 taking him two shots clear of Simon Baxendale, Michael Spencer and Stephen Ellis.

Sean Ring led in division three with 69 from John Sullivan 70 and in division four Ian Hazlewood was top man with 69.

Bramhall ladies played for the Silver Jubilee Cup and Caroline McGeorge was out on her own in division one with 74, five less than Ali Hicks.

In division two Sarah Brown led in with 81 from Emily Spencer and Frances Kelvin, both 85.

Division three honours went to Maggie Beadle 83 and in division four the winner was Wendy Woodhead with 81.

The Captain’s Weekend for Hazel Grove’s men had Stephen Jones top of round one after a cpo on 65 with Nicholas Rothwell and a shot off the pace were Richard Pheiffer, Richard Gajewski and David Beswick.

In round two Callum Hughes led in with 68 from Fraser Macleod and Greg Aspinall by a shot.

The overall winner was Liam Mann with 139, closely followed by Callum Hughes and Fraser Macleod, both 140.

Grove’s ladies ladies played the Ping BB Stableford and it was won with 38 points by G O’Meara and G Thompson from M Morley and Viv Carroll and T Salter and J Jones, both 37.

Houldswort­h’s men played a bogey competitio­n for the Coronation Cup and in-form Peter Burgess won a cpo on +2 from David Hallworth and Geoff Wallwork.

Houldswort­h ladies were in action for the Centenary Trophy and it was won by Christine Waterfield with 79 from Elizabeth Fallows 80 and Audrey Somers 81.

Reddish Vale ladies played for the Past Captains’ Trophy and Pam Costello was in form control with her huge 40-pointer taking her well clear of Sheila Cowlard 30 and Barbara Lee and Jeanette Kinder, both 28.

Vale’s men were in bogey action and Stuart Wilde romped to victory in division one on +6 from Alan Jones +2 and Louis Covell level par.

Division two was won by Mark Lupton on +2 from Alan Bell level par and in division three David Lewis was the star with +6 from Steven Smith and Ray O’Sullivan both +3.

Stockport ladies played two medal rounds in Mrs White’s competitio­n and in round one Yvonne Watson won a cpo on 72 from Jill Sanders and Lynn Spence with Deryn Merry and Mary Williamson a shot off the pace.

In round two It was Yvonne Watson who was the star with 71 from Jill Sanders 74 and Val Garrett and Lynn Spence, both 76.

A pro’s Stableford for Stockport’s men was won by Jacob Smith after a cpo on 40 points from Jim Denmark, one more than Clive Beveridge, Ian Kells and Phil Kay.
