MORE than 25,000 people had fun sometimes in the sun - at Stockport Carnival.

The annual event took place on Saturday and included a parade and fun day with the weather staying dry for everyone.

There was a record number of floats in the parade, which began at Belmont Way in Heaton Norris and made its way through the town centre to Woodbank Park for the fun day.

More than 40 groups were in the parade and Stockport Ukrainian Club was named best float.

Other winners were the Circus House (best walking group), Dame Chardonay (best dressed in parade) and Vernon Primary (best school).

First Eclipse Cheerleaders and Tameside Diamonds shared the best newcomer award.

It is estimated that several thousand pounds was raised in street collections and this will be split between charities including the Wellspring and Stepping Hill’s neo-natal unit.

Luba Brown, from the organising committee, said: “It went really well. More than 25,000 were at the fun day, which shows the level of support and that people are really getting behind us.

“It stayed dry and the sun even came out so the weather did us proud too. It is a fantastic community day with a good atmosphere.

“Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, which makes the work involved in putting the event on all worthwhile.”

Organisers have thanked everyone who helped on the day as well as sponsors Orbit Developments.

Gresty Flowers, Totally T-Shirts, the Midway pub, Chris Bennett Heavy Haulage and transport firm William Kirk have all also been thanked.

Mayor of Stockport Linda Holt attended the event and was on the parade judging panel.

Attention now turns to next year’s carnival and additional volunteers to join the organising committee are being sought.
