STOCKPORT cancer survivors and fundraisers are celebrating after their recent Relay for Life event helped them to surpass their target of half a million pounds raised for Cancer Research UK over the last 12 years.

Relay for Life, an overnight fundraising event now in its 12th year in Stockport, is a celebration of life and hope to help beat cancer and the end of many months of fundraising.

During the event, teams of between eight to 15 people of all ages take it in turns to walk round a track.

Team members not on the track take turns to rest, eat, sleep in their tents which are set up in the middle of the site or watch demonstrations performed by scientists.

The event includes a lap of honour for cancer survivors and a Candle of Hope ceremony in memory or in celebration of loved ones affected by cancer.

This year’s Relay For Life Stockport, held at The Kingsway School, Cheadle, on July 8 to 9, raised £51,000 to help fund Cancer Research UK’s work.

Bethany Felton, Cancer Research UK local fundraising manager, said: “We’d like to thank the Stockport Relay for Life fundraising committee, the teams and all the participants of this year’s event for their fantastic fundraising for Cancer Research UK.

“The money raised will fund research to beat cancer sooner in Manchester, helping to ensure more men, women and children in the north west and across the UK survive.

“Cancer survival rates have doubled since the 1970s and Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of this progress.

“However, we are only able to achieve this thanks to the dedication and commitment of our supporters.”
