Hero firefighter saves man at station
A HEROIC firefighter proved he is never off duty when he saved the life of a man having a heart attack at a train station.
Nathan Cane was walking through Euston Station in London, when he noticed a man on the floor surrounded by people. He gave the stricken commuter CPR and used a defibrillator brought by nearby officers to bring him back to life.
The man was John Newman, uncle of Channel 4 newsreader Cathy Newman. He made a full recovery after heart bypass surgery.
Nathan, 45, of Hazel Grove, said: “It was pretty daunting.
“He had just given his agonal gasp [last breath] so I knew he was dying.
“My training kicked in and along with the two police officers we just got to work. I’m so glad we managed to have such a positive influence on John’s condition.”
Although he lives in Stockport, Nathan, unable to transfer to Greater Manchester, is dedicated enough to commute to London to work as a firefighter for four days of shifts a week.
He hopes to soon be reunited with John, who has made a full recovery.
John said: “All I remember was feeling chest pain and collapsing.
“Then it’s a blank until I woke up on route to the nearest hospital. Nathan is the reason I am alive, he’s a real hero.”
Following his lifesaving exploits Nathan, who lives with his wife and two daughters, has been nominated for a St John Ambulance Everyday Heroes award.
He is a finalist in the hero of the year category and is against four other rivals for the title. The awards, at the Hilton London Bankside will be held on September 28.
