Car is engulfed in a huge fireball

-

THIS is the dramatic moment a car was engulfed in flames in Reddish.

Huge plumes of smoke billowed across the street as the fireball erupted on a residential road last Tuesday afternoon.

Eyewitnesses heard a bang before feeling extreme heat radiating from the Vauxhall Corsa as the vehicle burst into flames.

Firefighters were called at about 2pm to Reddish Road in Reddish – just outside Morrisons – following reports of a huge blaze.

One fire crew from Whitehill station was sent to the scene and crews used breathing apparatus and one hose reel to put out the car fire.

They took just five minutes to extinguish the flames and were on the scene for 15 minutes.

Nobody is believed to have been injured in the fire and the driver was out of the vehicle at the time, a fire service spokeswoman said.

Stu Heap, 40, was walking home when he saw the car burst into flames.

He said: “I saw a massive plume of smoke and felt the heat straight away. A guy who lives nearby said he heard a bang and then suddenly felt this heat.

“The fire service were extremely quick, they were there literally within minutes.

“It’s quite a busy area with the supermarket being there, so it’s good they put it out so quickly. Fair play to them.”

Liam Smith was walking to Morrisons when he saw clouds of smoke on the street.

He said: “I was just walking to the supermarket.

“I looked up and saw huge flames – it was quite surreal really. I’d never seen anything like it before.”

A fire service spokeswoman said: “We got a call at 2pm to reports of a car fire on Reddish Road in Stockport.

“One single pump was sent to the scene. Our GMP colleagues were managing the traffic. We used one breathing apparatus and one hose reel, as well as cutting equipment.

“We were on the scene for 15 minutes. The owner was in attendance. There is nothing to suggest it was deliberate.”
