REAL Housewife of Cheshire Ampika Pickston is adding a touch of glamour to the fight for survival of a social club likened to TV’s Phoenix Nights.

Cheadle Social Club, on Ashfield Crescent, once had around 800 members but now has 200, of which only 50 are ‘active’ - meaning users of the facilities.

This has left members desperately trying to raise £5,000, otherwise they fear it could close by Christmas.

And they have received a welcome boost from the ITV reality show star Ampika, who will host a psychic night there.

She said: “Every single penny raised is going to try and keep this wonderful, amazing social club alive.”

Ampika became involved as she is friends with one of the members and she will be joined by psychic Sarah-Rose, who will give personal readings.

Alan Walker, club treasurer, said: “At the moment it looks a bit like the club in Peter Kay’s Phoenix Nights and some people call it that.

“But over the years it has been an important part of life in Cheadle and we think it is important for it to remain open for that history and the community.

“It is very good of Ampika, it will be great exposure and bring a touch of glamour.

The psychic evening will take place on September 23, from 7.30pm until midnight.

In addition the club has set up a crowdfunding page asking for donations.

Over the years it has played host to big names - particularly in its 1970s and 1980s heyday - including snooker star Alex Higgins, 1966 World Cup winner Nobby Styles and comedian Bernard Manning.

Money raised would also be used to upgrade the facilities at the club and renovate the kitchen, function room, car park and roof.

Alan, 69 and a member for 28 years, added: “We are a not for profit organisation and are in a loss making position. If we carry on in this position, probably by Christmas the club will close.

“We are trying to do everything in our power. We want to keep it open for our active members, who put their heart and soul into it.

“Some people give 20 or 30 hours a week of their own time for free.”

Tickets for the psychic night are £20 and include a meet and great with Ampika and celebrity friends, a glass of bubbly, snacks, live music and a raffle.
