Up for a desired contested election
Cooperative. John Giles took to the microphone next to present the Cooperative Board’s proposal that the Guardian Account focus going forward should be on raising funds to obtain part ownership of Edgeley Park.
Following discussion, member and former writer of this column, Mike Davis moved ‘reference back’. This was seconded but defeated by vote on a show of hands.
Further discussion concluded with a vote that saw the Cooperative Board’s proposal approved.
The final business of the evening was the election of members to fill the board vacancies.
I have mentioned previously in this column the importance of preserving our democratic processes, and whilst elections to the Cooperative Board probably do not feature very prominently in peoples priorities, they remain vitally important if County’s future, and the supporters part in it, is to be safeguarded.
So it was disappointing that insufficient nominations were received to ensure a contested election!
This meant that the following nominated members were confirmed as board members by the meeting: Edward Keane, Andy Plant and Andy Burt. The Chairman welcomed the new board members, and the meeting closed in a suitably convivial atmosphere.
Contested elections next year? I am not holding my breath!
