Lane storm to victory over Mellor

- LANCASHIRE AND CHESHIRE AFL

STORM Caroline’s remnants saw the bulk of the day’s fixtures postponed, including Rochdalians’ Lancashire Cup match at Caton, but three Premier Division games survived including the top fixture between the second and thirdplaced teams with Mellor hosting High Lane.

Lane got off to a flier as two excellent team goals were finished in clinical style by Jimmy Leeson and Liam Ludlain.

Dave Whelan pulled a goal back to Mellor but it was not enough to prevent High Lane going on to a 4-2 win that moves them to within seven points of runaway leaders Moorside Rangers.

Newton Heath took a big step towards mid-table security with a fine 5-2 win over Newton and Whalley Range enjoyed a close 2-1 win over Abacus Media to move level on points with Rochdalians.

Division One was restricted to just one game and leaders Old Stretfordians extended the gap over secondplaced Waterloo with an efficient 3-1 win at Chorltonians.

Strets lead Waterloo by seven points but Waterloo have four games in hand.

Division Two saw just one game survive but it proved to be a real thriller as lowly Bedians and AFC Oldham battled for points to lift them up the table.

There was only one other game to survive the elements and it came in Division C with a local derby between Parrs Wood Celtic seconds and Manchester Rovers.

Rovers had Kyle Indesh-Walker (two) and Manu Dest providing the goals in an enjoyable contest.

Both sides led and AFC looked to have claimed a point as Olly Carey completed his hat-trick to draw his level at 3-2.

But a storming finish by Bedians took them to a 6-3 win with their scoring hero being Sean Chappell with three pre-Christmas crackers backed by strikes from Mike Sherington (two) and Mike Cosgrave.

The Land C are looking at changing their constitution in 2018 to allow lower teams from clubs higher in the football pyramid to join the L and C for the 2018/19 season.

Any club from higher leagues wishing to get more details on the proposed changes can contact the L and C secretary Brian Davies on secretary@landc. org.uk to see what opportunities may be available for their clubs.
