Oswell urged to stay at County

COUNTY’S star striker Jason Oswell can be a big hit in the Football League according to boss Jim Gannon – who reckons the striker’s best bet is continue his development at Edgeley Park for the foreseeable future.

Oswell moved onto 20 goals for the season with a superb hat-trick to take all three points against

impressive newcomers Spennymoor on Saturday.

And with a high number of league games called off due to the wintry conditions over the UK at the weekend, a number of scouts from across the country were in attendance at Edgeley Park to watch Oswell’s hat-trick heroics.

The ex Newtown frontman is the league’s leading marksman with 18 league goals in just four months at County, and Gannon admitted the 25-year-old is bound to attract “huge interest” with his contract up in the summer.

“Jason is a goal getter. “said Gannon.

“He’s not your typical big man, his size portrays him as someone who should be flicking on and should be a platform for linking up, but his real strength is poaching and getting on the end of crosses.

“He has shown his ability time and time again this season.

“If he keeps scoring, obviously more and more interest will come. There’s certain aspects of his game to improve, and then I’ve got no doubt that he can be a Football League player.

“But Jason knows that there’s no better platform for him than here at this club if he wants to remain a part-time player,” said Gannon.

While it Oswell’s goals caught the eye, County chief Gannon insisted any potential play-off push will be “a team effort” at Edgeley Park.

“I said in my programme notes before the game that I wanted a real collective team effort on Saturday, and you can look at Jason and say he got three goals or Stephen O’Halloran got man of the match, but it’s not about one man, it’s about the team.

“Even down to the lads who came on, Ben McKenna giving us twenty minutes to get on the front foot late on, or players like Dan Cowan and Gary Stopforth running themselves into the ground, it’s about the group as a whole and what we can achieve.

“We’ve shown on Saturday that we can get the better of these promotion chasing sides, and if we just continue to improve and stick together as a group, whilst adding a little bit of guile and quality in the right places, we’ll be giving ourselves a really good chance of getting right into the mix.”
