Stockport Old Town

- Rosemary Barratt

THE Stockport music scene is thriving with many young musicians, and talented indie-pop band Kashmere look set to be the next local lads to follow in the footsteps of Blossoms with their sold-out Manchester gigs and a tour of China planned for the summer.

Lead guitarist Charlie Cole started his musical apprenticeship working as an assistant in Stockport’s only independent music shop, Fab Music Store.

When he wasn’t serving customers Charlie was honing his lead guitar skills on the wide range of custom and vintage guitars in stock.

Fab Music Store is the ‘go to’ place in Stockport for guitars and musical equipment, offering an essential service for the town’s many musicians.

The shop recently moved from Little Underbank to larger premises at 74 Lower Hillgate and is a leading supplier of new and used guitars and all other related equipment.

Owner and all-round good guy Jason Skarratt has been in the music industry for over 30 years and has the experience to ensure that visitors walk away with the best instrument for their needs. You can not only plug into Jason’s extensive specialist knowledge but also make use of his guitar repair service, select from a range of used guitars and equipment and enjoy music tuition.

Fab Music Store is so much more than a shop, it has heavily invested in supporting the town’s live music scene, particularly young up and coming artists and helping to deliver community events in the town.

Every last Friday of the month Jason manages the PA and sound equipment for all the music performers that play at Foodie Friday in the Market Hall, helping everyone from solo acoustic artists to large community choirs to sound their very best.

Fab Music Store was also a supporter of the Stockport Old Town Folk Festival, donating instruments for our free ukulele workshops hosted by the Stockport Ukulele Players. These are now used every month at the regular meet up Tap and Strum, which takes place this Friday and every third Friday of the month upstairs at The Petersgate Tap at 19a St Petersgate.

Tap and Strum welcomes anyone who would like to sing along, strum along or perform at the Open Mic.

You can bring your own instrument but ukuleles are provided thanks to Fab Music Store!

The Petersgate Tap are brilliant supporters of local music and community events and you can get great beer there too with a warm welcome from landlords Alan and Chris.

There’s so many amazing dedicated people who are invested in making your visit to Stockport Old Town enjoyable so please come and check out everything it has to offer and support your local independents.
