Harriers take Waltz plunge

HARRIERS athletes dove straight into weekend action with the Whaley Waltz.

Ultimately, they had to endure some tough temperatur­es, shooting up to 28 degrees.

Netherthel­ess the heat and hills (which elevated to an astonishin­g 899ft) didn’t disrupt the athletes from ploughing on from the town centre start line to a leap of faith into the river towards the end.

The first Stockport Harrier to come through the line with a terrific time of 43.21 was James Corden placing in at eighth.

Second was Simon Pickard (45.50) and thirdly Phil Burns (46.24).

First female athlete was Rachael Blight (51.24) who came in with an overall position of 50th and 4th Female. Fiona Johnson (52.17) was the second Harrier and thirdly Estelle McGuire (59.18) who also took the 1st Female V50 prize.

The youngsters competed in a quadrathlo­n on the Saturday held at the home stadium, Woodbank Park.

There the juniors revealed their true potentials and talents from throws to sprints, their efforts were admired by spectators and coaches especially in the given conditions.

Jack Doodson had a great day at the on Saturday, taking half a second off his 100m PB with 12.4, throwing a PB of 7.16m and over 7m in the shot for the first time, jumping 5.35m for the longest jump of the Long Jump Competitio­n before running a five second personal best of 2:27 in the 800m to take second place in the competitio­n.

In the U15 girls, Lucy Robinson set a new Championsh­ip Record in the Long Jump with 5.21m. She also improved her shot by half a metre from last weekend’s Pentathlon, was just a tenth off her 100m PB and finished the day with a brilliantl­y judged run in the 800m to win the race and finish the week with a time a full 12 seconds quicker than her PB. That equated to almost 150 extra points when it came to the Pentathlon.

Ella Chambers finished seventh in a strong competitio­n with an excellent PB jump of 4.59m in the Long Jump and a shy of 7.44m on her first competitio­n moving across the circle being the highlights.

Rebecca Leather finished 11th with her best result of the day coming in the shot where she produced a PB of 7.70m, more than a metre ahead of her previous best.
