Always ask for references before agreeing a job. Check these out – find out if there were any problems.

If they are a member of one of the trades organisati­ons, ask for their version of what membership involves. If they are vague or exaggerate, move on.

Never pay upfront for a job. But stage payments – perhaps weekly – although paying for expensive appliances can be acceptable.

It’s best to get at least three quotes for a substantia­l job. Find out what that includes. Do you have to pay extra for specialist workers such as Gas Safe approved fitters? And how long does the quote hold good for?

Insist on the trader providing a real address – especially if it’s a major work – as well as a phone and email.

If you are a tenant, always check first with your landlord to see if it’s fine to continue.
