Questions over nursery closure

-

THE closure of a Stockport nursery has prompted a resident to quiz the council about its decision to withhold part of its childcare funding.

Diane Coffey challenged the authority after discovering Bright Beginnings Nursery, on Garners Lane in Adswood, is to close next month.

Speaking during a recent cabinet meeting, Ms Coffey asked: “As you are aware Bright Beginnings Nursery will close in August due to rising costs which would mean raising prices some 20pc. Is the council likely to reconsider their decision to withhold some of the government provision for the 30-hours free care?”

The nursery was a not for profit organisation – and charged, on average, £42.50 per child per day and £199.50 per child per week.

Coun Dean Fitzpatrick said the council was sorry about the planned closure: “Lack of finances was a factor in its closure following the introduction of the early years funding formula, coupled with the extension of childcare hours.”
