Children buzzing over their artwork
AGIANT bee created by children with complex needs in Stockport will be part of one of the largest mass participation arts events held in the north west.
After months of hard work, the Seashell Trust’s Shellbee will go on display inside Manchester’s Royal Exchange Theatre, forming part of the Bee in the City trail.
The bee has been designed to encourage children and young people with sensory impairment to engage with the artwork, which lights up, buzzes and vibrates.
It was designed by the trust’s artist in residence, Lauren Mullarkey and every pupil created their own honeycomb tile to cover the base.
Underneath, the bee has knitted stripes made of long-haired wool and a layer of copper underneath the wool completes an electric circuit, so the eyes light up and the whole bee vibrates and buzzes when certain areas are touched.
The buzz noise was produced by Chris Emerson, viola player with Manchester’s Hallé Orchestra.
Headteacher Anne Gough said: “We’re so proud for our pupils to be part of such a largescale and prestigious art event.
“It’s wonderful Shellbee is designed to enable sensory impaired children to engage with the art trail. She’s guaranteed to put a smile on everyone’s face.”
Lauren added: “A lot of love has gone into Shellbee.
“The most wonderful part has been the fabulous team of children, staff, volunteers, artists and musicians who have all contributed to make this sculpture a true celebration of diversity.
“The students we work with deserve this limelight.” »»Bee in the City takes place from July 23 to September 23.
