AN ANIMAL-loving schoolgirl has smashed her target of raising £1,000 for the RSPCA and won an award for her efforts.

Libby Cantwell, 11, from Reddish, set herself a demanding New Year’s resolution to raise the cash before the end of 2018.

And after six months she hit her target with sponsored challenges such as mountain climbs, bike rides and baking.

The charity has rewarded her by giving her the RSPCA honour in young people award at its annual prize-giving ceremony.

Libby, a pupil at Reddish Vale, said: “The reason why I am trying my best to help the RSPCA is because animal cruelty upsets me.

“I want to help in any way I can to make sure all the abused animals have a happier, brighter life and future.

“I just think what greater love can you get than from your loving pet. I love any animal big or small, creepy or crawly.

Libby’s first challenge was to climb Great Gable with her mum Leanne, 34, which at 2,949ft is the seventh highest mountain in England.

She also volunteers at a farm that enables disabled people to work with animals and organises children’s parties with TV reptile expert Crocodile Joe.

Her favourite animals are cats - of which she has two at her home on Marland Crescent.

Leanne said: “We are all extremely proud of Libby’s achievements. She offers inspiration not only for those who are part of her life, but for anyone wanting to achieve great things.

“The love she has for animals gives her the strength and courage to tackle any challenge. The fact she has already hit her target is testament to just how determined she can be.

“I can’t put into words how proud I am of her.”

Libby was presented with her award at a ceremony on Wednesday, July 11, at the Royal Society, in London.

Chris Wainwright, from the RSPCA, said: “There have been so many inspirational and heartwarming stories and we hope the awards have helped to highlight the positive power of animals and the impact they have on our lives.”
