‘Do not entrust any more public money to unelected officers’

-

THE Department for Transport won’t give Stockport council any more money for their proposed A6 to M60 bypass.

I for one am not surprised, given the dog’s dinner the council has made of the A6 MARR bypass and the way there is little scrutiny of Stockport council if it chooses to hide documents.

Councillor Roy Driver and Councillor Kate Butler – both members of the cabinet – wrote in the Stockport Express recently that I would be able to see documents pertaining to what went on regarding the development of the Vale View School.

Senior council officers have overridden them and won’t release any documents at all on this subject. I was also told I should contact my local councillor.

I emailed my new local councillor Angie Clark, whom I know and trust, but when I met her in the village she said she had received no email from me.

I presume she wasn’t allowed to receive it.

I would like to ask Stockport council why the Vale View School project, estimated to have cost £5.5m in October 2005, had gone up by April 2006 to £8.2m and was £2.4m overbudget.

The final cost rose within a further few months to £10m plus. Why? Vexatious to ask.

The Department for Transport is right not to entrust any more public money to these unaccountable and unelected senior council officers.

And we should save the money spent on allowances for ineffectual cabinet councillors too. Sheila Oliver Address supplied

SMART METERS ‘BRAINWASHING’

IT’S more brainwashing that smart meters save you money.

The meter itself saves you nothing, you save it by using less electricity which you can do with any meter. It’s common sense.

Plus it costs £400 which will be added to your bill as that’s what everyone will be charged to have it. John Willis Shaw Heath

THE JOBS ARE GOING ANYWAY

THOUSANDS of jobs would be lost if we leave Europe was the cry.

How many thousands of jobs have been lost so far over the last two years and we are still officially in Europe.

What should this tell you? John Palmer Shaw Heath

INCONSIDERATE DRIVER’S RANT

YET again I find myself writing about the rapidly declining standard of driving on Stockport’s roads.

What is going on? Earlier this week some numpty decided to double park on a busy main road while he loaded something of vital importance into his ancient hatchback.

When I dared to point out he had caused a real tailback as I managed to squeeze past I was met with a tirade of bad language. Good manners and consideration for others has vanished. Angry Driver
