We must show leadership over climate change issue

-

IN a recent letter to the Stockport Express, one of your readers was expressing concern over the Americanisation of Britain and even wondered whether one day we might well become the 51st state of the union.

I am sure that will never happen, but if the scale of American influence can sometimes seem rather daunting. It might be worth reflecting on the influence which Britain has had on America.

The American colonies were once subject to the British Crown and even to this day are still very much the products of the founding fathers, who left England’s shores on tiny sailing ships like the Mayflower, in the mid 17th century.

Those fledgling British colonies are now, of course, an all-powerful nation of 330 million people.

That America and other former colonies of the British Empire are today doing so well is surely something to celebrate and be immensely proud of.

However, just as Britain once tried to lead the world in its building of a huge physical empire, I think it now needs to give leadership on the issue which threatens the very existence of humanity.

I am, of course, talking about climate change.

I do not see this leadership coming from Brexit-obsessed government, and so I appeal to the people of Stockport to initiate a green revolution.

Everything depends on it. John Tyers Marple

MPS DON’T WANT BREXIT

THE result was exciting, but the day after June 24, 2016, I thought, “I’ll believe that happens when I see it, and the opposition will be kicking and screaming against leaving”.

And so it has proved to be.

We are told that 73 per cent of MPs voted to remain, so they did not want to leave then, and perhaps they don’t really want to implement leaving now, more than two years later.

It is, therefore, no surprise that progress has been slow, with much argument.

The government is aware of this and has to consider what legislation it can pass through Parliament with this opposition from MPs.

The UK is not leaving Europe, it is leaving the European Project.

Trading will continue after April 2019.

If leaving was seen to be a smooth process, other countries may be encouraged to follow, so it must appear to be so very difficult.

The Prime Minister said the decision was up to the British people.

It is very disappointing that politicians of all parties have not co-operated to implement the result of the 2016 vote, with acceptance and enthusiasm. Steven Bullough Hazel Grove

AIRPORT RELIEF ROAD SET TO OPEN (EXPRESS 03/10/18)

IT’LL be a nightmare. What use is a bypass (sorry - relief road) when every junction is traffic light controlled? No roundabouts, no flyovers, no underpasses, no sliproads... How will that improve traffic flow? Stockport is one big car park in rush hour. GARY SIDGWICK You should try driving a big truck from Hazel Grove to Stockport on the A6 just to get on the M60. It’s a nightmare NEIL EDWARDS Do hope it makes Stockport, A6 and Poynton better in a morning. It’s a nightmare every day when the school runners are taking one child less than a mile down the road in a Range Rover. ARRON GOODWIN Took them long enough. I wonder if it’s even worth it. So glad I don’t have to commute from Macclesfield to Salford every day and moved when I could.
