Close contest at Hazel Grove

MORE than 170 players from across Cheshire enjoyed the splendid and challengin­g Alister MacKenzie course at Hazel Grove despite some cool and rainy conditions in the first Autumn Meeting for Cheshire Life Members.

It provided a great contest with just two points separating the top six pairs.

Out on their own with 46 points were Eastham Lodge’s dynamic duo of Joe Fildes and Ray Parry.

Hot on their heels were Steve Marsh and Dave Sanders (Reddish Vale) and Mark Eden and Andrew Bennett (Tytheringt­on), both 45, and Roger Hopton and Steve Chapman (Tytheringt­on) and Wayne Colclough and Ian Lawton (Alsager), both 44.

Also enjoying the day both on and off the course were Cheshire President Chris Moore (Royal Liverpool) and Cheshire Vice President Andrew Henshall (Wilmslow) who both paid their compliment­s to Hazel Grove for making this another special day for the Cheshire Life members.

A Midweek Stableford at AVRO was won by Graham Turnock with 38 points from Derek Abbott 36 and Derek Ellershaw 30.

A Team am am at AVRO was led in by the hot trio of Peter Hale, Royce Lowis and Tony Mulin with a fine haul of 91 points taking them seven clear of Mark Brookes, Leslie Fowler and Vic Tarr.

The President’s Day Stableford for Cheadle’s men was won by Andrew Dicken with 39 points and hot on his heels were Duncan Clarkson 38 and Adam Stewart and Reg Skinner, both 37.

Cheadle ladies played a singles Stableford supporting Macmillan Cancer Relief and it was won by Beverley VanRoss after a cpo on 35 points with Bernadette Davidson and Brenda Peak.

Disley’s men played a BB Stableford for the Millenium Trophy and in a tight finish N Woodall and P Angus won a cpo on 44 points from G Bingham and J McAdam and S Kewley and W Henderson.

A singles Stableford for Gatley’s men was a walk in the park for Graham Fletcher who posted 41 points to finish well clear of Simon Wardle 35 and Colin Miller and David Woodworth, both 34.

The final Captain’s qualifier at Heaton Moor produced a string of good scores led in by John Brown with 65 from Simon Loydall, Peter Milner and Thomas Marshall, all 66.

Moor’s ladies were in medal mode with Elaine Atkin first past the post with 74 from Judy Collins 77 and Margaret Worrall 79.

A singles Stableford for Mellor and Townscliff­e ladies was led in by Lesley Parkinson with 35 points ahead of Christine Troughear 32 and Pat Phillips 31.

M and T’s men played a medal for the Sherwin Cup and Stuart Jones won the trophy after a cpo on 64 with Stuart Cumpsty ahead of Paul Butler 65 and Peter Roberts and John Stockdale, both 66.

Medal action for New Mills men saw division one led in by Ben Williams with 64, two less than Martin Wild, Aidey Smith, Simon Phillipson and Trevor Jones.

In division two John Coleman was unstoppabl­e with a superb 59 taking him seven clear of Gary Yates and Gavin Shields.

Josephine Coull was also in a league of her own in a ladies medal at New Mills posting 69 to finish ahead of Jean Taylor 76 and Maureen Harrison 78.

Romiley’s men played the final round of the Handicap Cup and it was won by B Logan with 68 from CJ Byle 72 and D Wilson and T Croucher, both 75.

A Stableford for Romiley ladies was won by Hilary Craven with 34 points, two more than Joan Mellor and Janet McRoberts.
