Sweep in need of players

- BOWLS JAMIE BRAMLEY

STOCKPORT’S only winter bowling sweep is in dire trouble and in need of more visitors to stay alive.

The historic event has been on the bowls map for eight years but numbers have started to dwindle.

The last two Sundays have seen events take place with the green in really good order.

In a bid to save the event, classic pairs has been arranged for Sunday November 25th 2018.

The event will be an invite to sixteen pairs who have all achieved success during the history of Love Lane winter bowls.

The organisers are hoping it will give some of these players a taste for how good winter bowling can be.

Bowls as a sport is in general decline with several big sweeps on the circuit lost last season.

On the green last Sunday saw a tremendous pairs final at Love Lane go down to the very last end.

Shaun Miller and Jamie Bramley held there nerve though to secure a nail biting 21-20 success.

The runners up were Paul Bannister and Leigh Smith who attend regularly from Openshaw.

This week’s event was a random pairs which saw Smith and Bramley team up in heavy going.

Needing to prevent Shaun Miller and John Cunningham scoring eight or more it looked a tall order for Smith and Bramley.

Playing the corners well though Smith and Bramley won with ease to lift the title in good style.
