Crook’s first in Forest fell race

- ATHLETICS LOUISE GELDART

THE annual Langley 7 fell race, set around beautiful Macclesfield Forest, saw some great results from the senior Stockport Harriers with Stephen Crook continuing his great current form to take first place in 49:40.

Lesley Sinclair was first vet 55 and Fiona Cooke took first Vet 50.

The course starts with a three-mile slog uphill, climbing 1,100ft overall!

Those that persevere are rewarded with great views across the tops as the scenic route continues on quiet country lanes to finish at a new location which makes the race actually eight miles now instead of seven.

Other great achievements from seniors last weekend came from Jenny Knass who won the Holme Pierrpoint Half Marathon in 88:32 and Jack Martin who came second at the Leeds Abbey Dash 10k 29.27!

Abigail Pawlett competed for England in Glasgow at the Schools Combined Events International with a strong Pentathlon performance to take Gold with a PB score of 3796 plus Hurdles and Long Jump PB’s and a High Jump over 1.70m.

This follows on from last year’s Gold in the Under 16s and as youngest member of the team this year.

Four junior teams and a senior men’s team took their place against high quality opposition from the length and breadth of the country at the National Cross Country relays in Mansfield. There were lots of great performances but unfortunately still no mud! A big shout out to the under 13s girls team made up of Saffron Meade, Sophie Ellwood and Freya Murdoch who finished sixth out of 88 teams.

Two non-running related events of significant importance are also materialising at the Harriers, firstly with club stalwart Peter Torrance reaching his birthday milestone of ‘three score years and ten.’

And as Pete reaches his 70th birthday he is as active as he possibly still can be as a coach, a committee member and also as a valued helper for nearly thirty years for the Harriers’ family. Peter unfortunately suffered a stroke in fairly recent time but in spite of a period of hospitalisation has bounced back and continues to give help and advice with his years of experience to club members both young and old.

Also of significance will be the Harriers’ annual general meeting which takes place in the Woodbank Park clubhouse at 7.30pm on Monday the 19th November and all members are urged to pitch in and assist with the many and varied jobs which need to be undertaken for the next club year. No birthday cake for this but the filling of the various committee positions is vital to ensure that the club prospers in the future.
