Process right for Co-op
SEVEN candidates chased five vacancies in the 2018 ballot in the first contested elections for the Cooperative Board in 10 years.
It has to be said that the turnout of just under 29 per cent was somewhat disappointing with 72 valid ballot papers received (25 postal and 46 electronically) from an electorate of 251- there being 10 ballot papers (6 postal and 4 electronically) that were declared spoilt.
It is worth stating that whilst a contested election inevitably results in disappointment for some it is the sign of not only true democracy that we all subscribe to but also a vibrant supporters organisation.
The result of the Stockport County Supporters’ Co-operative Board of Society Election 2018 is:-
The above can be interpreted as follows.
The first (top) 3 in the ballot serve on the Board for three years, with the fourth and fifth placed candidates serving a one year term.
In thanking Neil Le Milliere (Independent Returning Officer) and Catherine Burt the Cooperative’s Independent Secretary for their hard work ensuring the integrity of the ballot, it is also to be hoped however that the new Cooperative Board will not be slow in utilising the undoubted talents of those candidates who, this time, were not elected to the Board.
The Supporters Cooperative is far from being perfect either in structure or practise, but it does offer County Supporters a firm legal structure that will and does support them, and a democratic structure to keep those at the top on their toes.
