Rod’s 50 years on the buses

A BUS conductor is marking 50 years of service to at Stockport bus depot.

Rod Garner, from Higher Poynton, has worked on the buses for half a century, having started on December 2, 1968.

He began his career as a bus conductor for Stockport Corporatio­n at the old Heaton Lane depot, when three gallons of petrol left change from a pound.

Rod was initially told he wouldn’t last in the bus industry, having already been through two jobs at the age of 18, but is still going strong today, operating services from the Stockport depot.

He said: “I’ve been fortunate enough to clock up 50 years working in an ever-changing industry, where my friends and colleagues have always been the highlight and have made working with buses such an enjoyable time.

“I have at least another six months in me yet and will make sure I see out next summer before deciding on plans for retirement.”

Stagecoach Manchester managing director, Elisabeth Tasker, said: “Rod has demonstrat­ed a tremendous amount of loyalty to Stagecoach and the bus industry over the last 50 years and is one of the strongest characters in the Stockport depot.”
