Man held un­der men­tal health act in rape in­quiry

A MAN has been de­tained un­der the men­tal health act as po­lice con­tinue to in­ves­ti­gate the rape of a woman in a church­yard on Christ­mas Eve.

A 44-year-old was one of two men ar­rested on sus­pi­cion of rape fol­low­ing the in­ci­dent at St Mary’s Church in Stock­port town cen­tre.

He’s now been de­tained, but re­mains un­der in­ves­ti­ga­tion.

An­other man, 57, has been re­leased un­der in­ves­ti­ga­tion.

Po­lice sealed off the church­yard for sev­eral hours on Christ­mas Eve.

A num­ber of items of cloth­ing were seen in the door­way of the church and a cor­don was placed around the out­side of the build­ing.

The vic­tim, in her 30s, was taken to hos­pi­tal fol­low­ing the at­tack, where she was be­ing sup­ported by spe­cially trained of­fi­cers.

Speak­ing at the time Det Insp Ju­lia Bow­den said: “We have launched a full in­ves­ti­ga­tion and have spe­cially trained of­fi­cers sup­port­ing the vic­tim as she re­ceives treat­ment in hos­pi­tal.

“I would en­cour­age any­one who thinks they might have even the small­est piece of in­for­ma­tion that could as­sist our in­ves­ti­ga­tion to please get in touch as soon as pos­si­ble.”
