A MAN has been detained under the mental health act as police continue to investigate the rape of a woman in a churchyard on Christmas Eve.

A 44-year-old was one of two men arrested on suspicion of rape following the incident at St Mary’s Church in Stockport town centre.

He’s now been detained, but remains under investigation.

Another man, 57, has been released under investigation.

Police sealed off the churchyard for several hours on Christmas Eve.

A number of items of clothing were seen in the doorway of the church and a cordon was placed around the outside of the building.

The victim, in her 30s, was taken to hospital following the attack, where she was being supported by specially trained officers.

Speaking at the time Det Insp Julia Bowden said: “We have launched a full investigation and have specially trained officers supporting the victim as she receives treatment in hospital.

“I would encourage anyone who thinks they might have even the smallest piece of information that could assist our investigation to please get in touch as soon as possible.”

Call police on 101 quoting reference number 405 of 24/12/2018.
