Plans to build homes in town centre unveiled

- LISA MEAKIN

PLANS to build 14 affordable homes in Stockport town centre have been filed at town hall.

Blueprints show a patch of land off Orchard Street and Waterloo Road has been earmarked to house the mix of two and three-bed properties.

Applicant ID4 Living is seeking permission to develop the site and, if approved, construction work is expected to begin in March.

Once completed the properties will belong to Stockport Homes, which is a councilowned management company.

The firm has allocated two of the properties for social rent – and the remainder will be marketed as low cost shared ownership. The development would form part of the regeneration plans at Hopes Carr, which is already home to new apartment blocks and car parking.

“The mix of housing in terms of tenure, price, type and size will meet the requirements for first time buyers, families, disabled and elderly people,” planning documents read.

“The development will also boost the town’s economy – and make it a vibrant place to be during the day and evening.

“It will improve the area by regenerating a vacant and under-used site – and provide homes in a location readily accessible to jobs and services.”

The scheme would also form part of the council’s vision to create a 3,000home ‘urban village’ on the edge of town.

The formation of the first Greater Manchester ‘mayoral development corporation’ will allow town hall bosses to buy up land to get things moving. New mayoral powers will see the council kick-start a wave of regeneration around King Street West, Chestergate, the viaduct and railway station.

Thousands of new homes would be earmarked for a string of sites, covering 130 acres stretching west from the A6 and out towards the Pyramid.
