ARAPIST described as ‘every woman’s nightmare’ is back behind bars after escaping from prison.

The 39-year-old was jailed for life in 2001 after admitting rape following an attack in which he held a screwdriver to his victim’s throat after she woke to find a hooded Jones standing at the end of her bed. A manhunt was launched to find Jones after the escape, with police warning members of the public not to approach him.

ARAPIST described as ‘every woman’s nightmare’ following an attack in which he held a screwdriver to his victim’s throat is back behind bars after escaping from prison.

Stockport-born Wayne Jones fled from the North Sea Camp open prison just days after being transferred to the facility.

The 39-year-old, jailed for life in 2001 after admitting rape, was discovered missing last November during an evening check of inmates.

A manhunt was launched to find Jones, with police warning members of the public not to approach him.

Jones, who had a previous conviction for holding a chemist at gunpoint in 1997, was jailed for six months after admitting escaping lawful custody.

Previously, Jones broke into the house of his victim in Heaton Chapel.

Inside, the mother-oftwo found hooded Jones standing at the end of her bed. After threatening her with a screwdriver, he frogmarched her downstairs and subjected her to a horrifying sex attack.

Judge Timothy Mort said at the time: “It is quite clear that you have to be viewed as a significant risk to the public. This rape was truly horrendous.”

Lincoln Crown Court heard that when Jones was arrested in Sleaford, he was taken back to North Sea Camp.

Prosecutor Edna Leonard said: “The defendant was serving a life sentence imposed in 2001. He was transferred to North Sea Camp, an open prison with no perimeter fence, earlier in November of last year.

“On the evening of November 25, one of the officers was checking on the whereabouts of the defendant and realised he wasn’t on the premises and had escaped.

“He pinched a bike and he cycled off.

“The following morning a member of the public phoned the police. The police attended. He tried to run off and he was arrested and taken back to the prison.”

Jones, of North Sea Camp, admitted escaping from custody on November 25.

Mitigating Chris Jeyes said: “Finding an opportunity , he took it. He knows he shouldn’t have done. He was away for one night.

“Before he was in North Sea Camp he was in HMP Wakefield which is the largest high security prison in Europe.

“Quite how he was ever expected properly to adjust to conditions moving from the very highest security category to the very lowest is not clear particularly when he had been in prison so long in a high security jail.

“The move was doomed to failure from the outset. It would be extremely difficult for him to cope with.”

Judge Andrew Easteal when passing sentence said: “You were at large only for a matter of hours. It seems to have been spontaneous, stupid, ill-thought out and , I suspect, bitterly regretted by you now.”

Jones’ initial life sentence was given to him at Man- chester Minshull Street Crown Court in February 2001 after admitting charges of rape and burglary.
