ASERIAL drink driver found asleep at the wheel of his girlfriend’s BMW with an empty bottle of vodka and four Desperados - led police on a 15 minute chase on New Year’s Eve while on cocaine, a court heard.

Kamran Khaliq was slumped in the car in a Stockport car park with the engine running when officers knocked on the window in the early hours of December 31.

At the time, the 30-yearold - seen smirking outside court after he avoided jail - was banned from the road and had no insurance.

Khaliq refused to get out of the car when approached by officers and sped off, smashing through bollards.

In footage shown to Minshull Street Crown Court, Khaliq was seen speeding off before running red lights, driving on the wrong side of the road and reaching speeds of 50mph in a 20mph zone off Buxton Road in Hazel Grove.

He was eventually arrested after smashing into a police 4x4.

Khaliq had cocaine in his system, a blood test revealed, and a snap bag of the drug on him.

He had 49 micrograms of alcohol per 100 ml of breath; the legal limit being 35.

Khaliq, who has three previous convictions for drink driving, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving; driving while disqualified; driving with no insurance; driving with excess alcohol; failing to stop for police; and possession of a class A drug.

After watching the police dashcam footage, judge said: “It is pretty terrifying dangerous driving.”

Khaliq, of Bramhall Moor Lane, Hazel Grove, was sentenced to 16 months in prison, suspended for 18 months.

He was ordered to attend a ‘thinking skills’ course; complete 200 hours of unpaid work; abide by a four-month curfew; and complete 40 rehabilitation activity days.

Khaliq was banned from the road for five years.

Prosecuting, Denise Fitzpatrick said: “Fortunately, there were no pedestrians on the road at that time.

“One vehicle was forced into an emergency stop.”

Defending, Estelle Parkhouse said her client suffered from mental health issues and had sought help.

“He has an unenviable record,” she admitted.

“Police startled him and he panicked as his thinking skills were clearly impaired.”

Speaking from the dock, Khaliq said he had been attending a community centre for the past month, where he had sought help for ‘addiction problems’ and depression.

Judge Presland told him: “You are a person who has the ability to work your stuff out and I have heard that you have started to get involved in a mental health programme.

“Giving up alcohol is a difficult process.

“I am really pleased you are accessing help in the community and I really urge you to continue with that.”
