MP: Residents have concerns over demolition
HEALTH and safety chiefs say factory demolition works in Reddish are complying with regulations after complaints from residents.
Reddish MP Andrew Gwynne said he had received several complaints from local residents who have concerns over safety procedures and the air quality while demolition takes place.
Objections have been raised over the quality of air around Roland Road while preliminary asbestos removal from industrial buildings takes place in the area bounded by Roland Road and Margate Road.
A planning application was granted by Stockport council last May for demolition works and construction of 35 houses.
Reddish MP Andrew Gwynne said: “I’ve received several complaints from local residents who have genuine concerns over safety procedures and air quality around Roland Road while demolition works take place. My office is in contact with the council and HSE (Health and Safety Executive) on developments on-site and what more can be done to reassure the community on Roland Road. I will be getting back in touch with locals on developments as I receive them.”
Coun Sheila Bailey, Stockport council’s cabinet member for housing, said: “The demolition of the factory is part of the redevelopment of the site to provide housing and is regulated by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
“However given the concerns raised by residents, officers from the council have been out and witnessed the demolition process.
“We have also been in contact with the HSE and the demolition contractor. The information provided to the council is that the asbestos on site is being removed in accordance with relevant standards before the full demolition of the building takes place.
“The council will continue to monitor the demolition process and any complaints received.”
A spokesman for Westshield, who selected the demolition contractor, said: “We are working to the UK regulated standards and continue to undertake all work responsibly.
“We understand that the local community has concerns but we can assure you that we are working to the regulations that have been set and we have the health of the community in mind while undertaking this part of the works.
“We have had correspondence and a visit from the HSE who have cleared the works that have been undertaken. We continue to monitor all progress.”
Demolition work is due to finish in April.
