IS MAYOR’S POST EVEN LEGAL?

-

IT may be I am just naïve or that my memory is failing me or in fact I’m just plain thick but is there anyone out there who can answer this question.

Is the role of Mayor for Manchester a legitimate post?

As I recall, back in 2012, the people were asked: “Do you want an elected Mayor?”

The result was a resounding ‘no’ with a majority of over six thousand votes.

Now between that vote and the elections for Mayor I do not recall a public vote to see if we had changed our mind or not, so in effect the public has never sanctioned the post of Mayor. So is it legal? You may ask why it has taken so long to raise this point?

Simple, last week my mind was focused on two items, one the Stockport Express advised me that to meet Mr Burnham’s latest budget demands I will need to find an additional £33 per month next year, only to be advised the next day that my pension was to increase by £17 per month.

So I hope his post is legal and that the unwanted unnecessary extra level of bureaucratic administration that is the Mayor’s department will be scrapped.

If not, the way Mr Burnham is going the unlamented very expensive GMCC will seem like good value for money.

And it will always be the bottomless pockets and the bulging purses of the public that the politicians will rely on to feed their voracious hunger. M J Holland, address supplied
