Tour recounts town’s Peterloo involvement
THE Radicals v Loyalists historical route tour recounted Stockport’s involvement in the events leading up to the Peterloo massacre of 200 years ago.
In contrast to the massacre that would follow, a crowd of around 6,000 Stopfordians met at Sandy Brow on February 15, 1819 and successfully resisted an attempt by the authorities to break up the meeting.
Coun David Wilson said: “Many thanks to the very knowledgeable staff of Stockport Central Heritage Library for organising and conducting a very interesting tour that recalled our town’s part in the struggles for democracy in 1819.”
