On point for good behaviour

- IAN BROWN

IN this column two weeks ago, I outlined the reasons for my concerns about a statement issued by Guiseley AFC aimed at Stockport County and its supporters.

I called for a response from County, and am pleased to see that one has been sent, and indeed another to the FA following the subsequent referral to them.

The FA response was needed because we were again faced with possible sanction from the FA for alleged incidents, or more precisely one rather small incident, at the Guiseley game.

The incident in question involved the throwing of a shoe onto the playing area, which the home keeper showed to the referee.

Whilst the shoe was no doubt thrown onto the pitch as a prank, and landed a fair distance away from any player, it was seen as a valid complaint by the governing body.

The consequence was that Stockport County were again faced with a possible sanction, which could either be another fine or a points deduction.

As numerous pitch invasions, flare and smoke bomb throwing by County fans has previously clocked up warnings and fines the club can hardly afford, it is clear that the logical next step for the FA is the deduction of points.

Most County supporters conduct themselves with maximum decorum whilst following County home and away, but we need everyone to fully appreciate the danger of any incidents at all twixt now and the seasons end – we just cannot afford the promotion push to be dashed by a points deduction.

I was at Maidstone along with 88 well behaved and very supportive County fans who showed the way going forward.

We need more of this dogged County spirit, which gives those wanting to do us a disservice ( and the FA) no excuse to act against us.
