Art guild books in for centenary

-

STOCKPORT Art Guild celebrates a century since its formation this year.

To commemorate this landmark, they have published a local art history book that chronicles 100 years of art in Stockport from the Arts and Crafts Movement through to the present day.

The 250-page publication ‘StockpART - 100 Years of Putting ART into Stockport’ contains more than 150 images, references hundreds of artists including Harry Rutherford, Walter Sickert and LS Lowry, and uncovers some never been-told-stories.

Peter Davis MAFA, archivist at the Guild and author of the commemorative book, admits it’s been a challenge but a worthwhile one.

He said: “Stepping into the shoes of Stockport Guild’s forefathers has given me a newfound respect for the society.

“Writing this book has been both a labour of love and an onerous responsibility, but I’m thrilled with the end result.”

He added: “I hope it will give people a sense of what an amazing period the past hundred years has been for the development of art in Stockport.

“It would be a fantastic legacy if it also helps to inspire the next generation of local artists.”

A book launch event will be held this Saturday, May 11 in the Upstairs Gallery at the Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery. Arrive at 1.30pm for 2pm.

The author will be giving a short talk, refreshments will be provided and copies will be available. The event is free to attend.

This limited edition not-for-profit book is also available directly from www.StockpART.co.uk
