ABARBER who was formerly homeless has now made the cut for a national award.

Adam Holme is in the running for the Best Barber Shop at this year’s National Hair and Beauty Awards.

Around age 17, Adam says he fell in with the wrong crowd, and found himself on the streets.

However, after turning his life around, he completed a hairdressing course at Stockport College.

When he finished college, Adam worked at numerous different barber shops before he decided to strike out on his own and opened Mister Barber, in Hazel Grove, three years ago.

Speaking about his nomination, Adam, 39, said: “It’s unbelievable, I’m losing my mind.

“Barbering is my calling.

“I thought about it when I was 16, but when you’re 16 you’re naive and want to do what your friends are doing.

“I have found some stability.

“It’s never too late for anyone to change or do something, and go back to educate yourself.

“I really wanted to push myself and I wanted to be the best at what I do.”

He says he is planning to expand the London Road shop to accommodate more people in December, and has taken on an apprentice, Aaron Mather, who is now qualified.

Adam added: “I have my own range of products - I did some research, and spoke to a lot of people, until I found a company who would do it for me.

“I also do demonstrations at hair shows.

“It has gone from strength to strength.”

Adam is engaged to his partner, Abbie Yates, and the couple are now expecting a baby.

The awards ceremony will take place at a gala in Leicester on October 27.
