Queensgate Ladies retain club’s Wooden Spoon
THE final club event of 2019 was enjoyed by the bowlers of Bramhall Queensgate club last Sunday.
Having been rained off the previous weekend, the members determined to conclude the season in traditional fashion. Over 20 members participated, watched by other club bowlers.
Chairman Nat Heyes said: “Our club runs a range of social and competitive events each summer and it is good to see the support in evidence for the Wooden Spoon again this season.”
Pauline Mallory added: “This event is always keenly fought between the men and the lady members of Queensgate. Last time the ladies were narrowly defeated and thus awarded the Wooden Spoon. Today we are aiming to change that situation.”
Whilst many members bowl in competitive league matches every week in the season, this is a competitive match within the club, having been organised for over 10 years.
Sylvia Roberts who led out the ladies, commented: “We bowl alongside the men all season, but this time it is daggers drawn to prove we are a force to be reckoned with.”
Matches were very tense all afternoon, with fluctuating fortunes to both teams.
The final matches decided the outcome.
And it was a win for the men’s team, with their captain, Graham Porter, presenting the ladies with the Wooden Spoon for 2019.
Bowler Eileen Pemberton laughed: ”We may have lost today, but we will be seeking revenge in 2020.”
