Leigh raring to go in her Disley role

- GOLF GEOFF GARNETT

DISLEY Golf Club’s new Lady Captain Leigh Duffy has been a member of her club for 20 years and she is looking to enjoy her year to the full when action is restored at her beloved club.

Leigh is delighted to be back in action herself after suffering some nasty injuries in a skiing accident four years ago, as she explained: “I feel that I am still lucky to be playing golf because the accident resulted in a fracture of the humerus, humerus head and clavicle of my right arm.

“I needed two operations and a week’s hospital stay in France followed by a year of intense rehabilitation and physio in the hydrotherapy pool.

“I had very limited use of my right arm for 12 months but with help from professional golf lessons, adapting a new swing I am now again able to enjoy golf with my friends and fellow members- We enjoy Sunday drivers and a week’s golf holiday to Turkey with Golfingchix.

“Being able to return to the game is my golfing highlight!

“My current handicap is 30 with a best of 28 and I will be looking to play twice a week and also plan to play more fun golf in the coming year.

“At Disley we need to maintain our ladies section and are currently promoting our 9-hole newlymeasured course to our older ladies and members who have left the game because they are unable to play 18 holes.

“My plan is to contact ladies and offer three taster rounds with an offer of a 9-hole membership and we also plan to expand our academy which is held every Thursday at 6pm and run by our professionals Scott and Ian.

“My chosen charity is Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust – it is the only UK charity dedicated to women and their families affected by cervical cancer.

“Our Captain Dave Codd and President Pete Holland plan to offer plenty of fun golf competitions at Disley with friendly matches against other clubs such as Sickleholme and Cavendish and also organise plenty of social activities.

“It was very sociable on the Lady Captain’s Drive in morning when I asked the ladies to buy a flag £1 each for our charity and place up the first fairway where they thought my ball would land.

“Gaynor Calvert was nearest, she very kindly put the prize money back into the charity.as a result we raised £55.

“Then we played a fun comp Three Ball Texas scramble shot gun over 14 holes

“I played with two previous lady captains Ann McCormick and Irene Fell. We only played 12 holes coming off at the 16th omitting 17th,18th and we thought we had played 14 holes.

“As a result we were disqualified! We’ll never live it down.

“We are proud of our golf club, the course is stunning and our green staff work hard to maintain it in pristine condition.

“We are all looking forward to the day when we can step back on the first tee and for once in our lives we won’t care if it is a poor drive!”
