- GOLF GEOFF GARNETT

REDDISH Vale Golf Club were excellent host for some of Cheshire’s top girls as they competed in a Stableford competition for the Stella Watson Trophy which has been played for since the trophy was presented to the county many years ago.

The day was blessed by excellent weather and a pristine and very challenging Mackenzie course along the River Tame.

Scoring was not easy on some slick greens but as always some of the players master the conditions and post some excellent scores.

The bulk of these came in the later stages of the competition led by a superb haul of 44 points by Abigail McCoy of Bramall Park Golf Club off her 31 handicap.

But as always someone keeps their cool on the course and it was Delamere Forest’s 13-year-old eight handicapper Aaron Mohun who had a day to remember as he won both the u16 and u14 trophies for his gross score of 71, a feat rarely matched in the last 30 years since the double championship began.

It left him three shots clear of a logjam of five players led by Jack Bent (Bramhall) from Jack McKie (Eaton), Cameron Walker (Caldy), Charlie Ward (Prestbury) and Spencer Davies (Wallasey).

Aaron was able to be presented with the two trophies by a socially distanced Cheshire President David Durling (Shrigley Hall) who thanked all of the players, county officials and Helsby Golf Club for making this an excellent day for the county highlighting the fine talent they have coming through the junior ranks.
