- GOLF GEOFF GARNET

HEATON Moor Golf Club Wednesday section turned out in force for the Wednesday Chairman’s charity competition.

The event raised £433 for Cancer Research, the choice of Ken Wardle, a club legend and Wednesday Chairman.

Ken made it a day to remember and add to his long list of success at his beloved club as he found an excellent partner in new member Paul Sperring posting a fabulous 48 points.

Paul is a top local cricketer who now has golf as his top sport and he outlined his great career in cricket since he arrived from Australia in 2000.

He said: “I came to England in April 2000 for six months of cricket at Cheadle and I am still here 20 years later!

“I was Captain of Cheadle or Didsbury for 15 years with plenty of runs and wickets along the way - but the highlights are all team successes in 2001 the treble at Didsbury, the title at Cheadle in 2004 and then at Didsbury 2008.

“This was followed by promotion at Cheadle in 2012 and 2014 and no relegations.

“I stayed in the UK as I met my wife and we were together 14 years with two boys aged 16 and 11 and we are now divorced.

“I’m from Melbourne’s south east suburbs and my hometown is Berwick.

“I joined Heaton Moor GC in January as my cricket career winds down with the lockdown in March but I have got right into it post lockdown and have loved the competitive side to the competitions.

“I currently playing off 15 and hoping to get down to single figures by the end of summer 2021.

“I had a day out when playing with Ken Wardle and we dovetailed nicely for our 48 Stableford points and I am hoping to swing the club half as well as Ken at 84!!

“I am loving the combination of social and competition at HMGC, have made loads of friends very quickly and it’s made the transition from cricket to golf far quicker than I envisaged.”
