Winning in Wales makes the weekend

A WIN always lifts the spirits, always makes Monday morning that much sweeter but there’s an added bonus when we cross the border and that victory is over Wrexham.

We’ve played them so many times and had some great wins and some terrible losses but this weekend we won 3-0, playing some exquisite football.

We didn’t start too well in the opening 10 minutes the ball was a hot potato for us, hardly a pass was successfully completed but on 14 minutes County, with their first foray into the Wrexham box scored.

Both Harry Cardwell and Alex Reid muscled past their respective markers and with the deftest of touches Alex poked the ball past Christian Dibble to put us on our way.

From there it was all County; the Welsh heads were already dropping and when just before the half hour the game as a meaningful contest was over.

The same players combined to get exactly the same result, a strong head from Cardwell found Reid unmarked at the back post to double his and County’s lead.

The first half ended with us having two shots on target and two goals scored whilst Wrexham had had so much position in the first 10 minutes but hardly produced a meaningful chance or save for Ben Hinchliffe to make.

The second half was largely in the same vein but without the home side’s early pressure.

Our midfield was in complete control; Ryan Croasdale gave a man of the match performance constantly breaking down attacks whether at the edge of our penalty box or theirs. John Rooney and Paddy Madden showed occasional flashes of brilliance, a partnership that will grow and grow into one of the best we’ll see in this division.

Tom Walker and Macauley SouthamHales showed enough pace to be a real threat for the full 90 and it was Macauley, flying down the left, who was fouled for a penalty that was duly dispatched by John Rooney.

One point to note was that the guilty defender didn’t get a card of either colour even though he was the last man and very, very late they say it’s a case of “double jeopardy” but for me it was dangerous and therefore a straight red!

We’re now eight games unbeaten, five wins and three draws and that streak should continue over the next few weeks, Kings Lynn twice, Maidenhead and Boreham Wood are next before we travel to a tough Halifax side.

Top spot might be a touch too far but second and a home play-off is well within our grasp.
