‘Top clubs’ show their disdain for supporters

- IAN BROWN

WELL, would you believe it?

Not content that the nation is currently struggling to stave off a global pandemic, football’s top clubs (or so they might bill themselves) opted to put us all through the mangle again via an announcement that they were bidding the Football Pyramid goodbye and forming a Super League, exclusive to themselves without the encumbrance of promotion and relegation to worry about.

That this move ultimately failed was a profound relief to an amazingly wide coalition of groupings from government to grass roots supporters’ organisations, who despite their variously far-flung parts, managed to thwart this most unwanted example of glorious self interest with obvious verve and speed.

Indeed the would be super leaguers bit off rather more than was chewable, as Supporters Trusts and organisations that are usually no great friends, most notably ‘The Spirit of Shankly’ (Liverpool) and the two Manchester clubs’ supporters’ groups, and fans all over the UK made their outright opposition to this mooted move abundantly clear.

It was a heart -warming response, and all the better for being so very affective!

County supporters were looking forward to an influx of disillusioned City and United fans. This may still happen, but to a smaller degree post climb down, but the likelihood is many supporters of the ‘big six’ will opt to let bygones be bygones and resume relations with their chosen club.

That would be a pity, they have had a glimpse of how they are regarded by those clubs, and they would be welcome to join us at Edgeley Park when crowds return inside the stadium for games.

They just might like it….they already know the pies are better and the football has some soul too.

Think about it lads and lasses!
