Duo win thriller in day of drama
MARPLE Golf Club were great hosts for the latest Cheshire Members meeting with a full field enjoying the challenges of their course bordering the Macclesfield Canal.
It was a day of superb weather, excellent conditions and fantastic hospitality off the course.
It was a day of real drama on the course with just a point separating the top eight pairs with four locked on the top score of 44 points.
Getting the nod in the cpo were Tytherington’s dynamic duo of Eddie Crawford and Jeffrey Webb from Cliff Bagnall (Alsager) and Marc Williams (Hartford), John Royle and John Lewis Williams (Sale) and Phil Dean (Pryors Hayes) and Jim Speers (Antrobus).
Leading a quarter of 43-pointers were Vale Royal Abbey’s Martyn Hall and Ian Brandon.
The Cheshire organisers were given great support by all at Marple including their excellent starter Ray McPhee.
A Seniors Stableford at Marple was won by Peter Clarke with 37 points from Jack Pryce 36 and Gordon Mutch 35.
Marple ladies were in hot form with an EG Medal seeing Lynne Andrew win a cpo on 62 from Linda Wilton, three less than June Chadwick.
The 9-hole Stableford was led in by Jennifer Jones with 17 points.
In the July medal at Marple the three divisions were won by John Tennant
65, Kevin Skoberne 66 and Shaun O’Halloran 64.
The Wednesday Stableford at Hazel Grove was won by Nicholas Rawlinson with 42 points from Ashok Popat 41 and
Paul Ralph and club legend Andrew Hill, both 39.
The second Summer medal qualifier at Grove needed a cpo on 65 to see Matthew Bonner lead in from Richard Booth, one less than Joshua Nadin and Rick Barron.
A ladies Stableford at
Grove was won by Clare Daniel with 37 points.
A qualifying medal for Houldsworth’s men had Graham Bardsley leading in with 63,one less than Paul Stelfox, Alan Clews and Paul McCallum.
A Wednesday Stableford at Reddish Vale had the divisions topped by Vaughan Stott with a massive haul of 45 points, Gary Brown with an impressive 44 and Geoffrey Brookes 42.
Mark Plaskett won a pro’s Stableford at Vale with 41 points, one clear of Graham Sutherland.
A ladies Stableford at Stockport was led in by Catherine Smith with 36 points from Val Garrett and Abbie Cowlard, both 34.
A midweek Stableford at Stockport had Les Ross in charge with 41 points from Stewart MacKinnon 40 an John Bancroft and Catherine Smith, both 39.
Despite all the restrictions and problems caused by Covid Romiley Golf Club Captain Colin Davies and Lady Captain
Jackie Purcer were delighted to raise £4,064.65 for their chosen charity during their year in office.
The charity was ‘Canine Partners – Amazing Dogs Transforming Lives’.
It is a charity very close to both of their hearts with Colin’s niece Annette and Jackie’s friend’s daughter Louise.
Their dogs Poppy and Spike make an incredible difference and enhance their lives so much helping them in so many ways.
The cost of initial and on-going training of the dogs is so high and with no events taking place at the golf club due to Covid Colin and Jackie really appreciated the donations of members in raising such a great sum of money.
Lady Captain’s Day at Bramhall had Wendy Woodhead winning a close contest posting 67, one less than Sally Kirk.
Bramhall’s men were also in ‘major’ action for the Centenary medal and Martin Burns was an impressive winner with 64, from Paul Symmons who won a cpo on 66 from Glynn Winterbottom.
A midweek Stableford at Avro had Karl Needham in firm control with 42 points from Chris Robinson 37.
The Avro Juniors President’s trophy saw Alfie Howard win a cpo on 59 from Alex Tubb with Sam Young in third spot.
It’s getting to crunch time in the Manchester and District historic Bell Cup with the remaining teams looking to battle their way into the quarterfinals in the biggest Inter Club Ladies Knock Out in the country.
Saddleworth have already won their way into the last eight with a win over Davyhulme Park.
