ACRICKET club has raised more than £1,000 in memory of a former player during a memorial match.

Stockport Georgians Cricket Club raised £1,167.33 in memory of Rizwan Jameel, who had played for the club for a decade before he died suddenly of complications linked to diabetes in January 2021.

The club hosted a mixed game with Stockport Cricket Club followed by a competitive game against Heaton Mersey Cricket Club.

All the money raised from the memorial day was donated to Stockport Tadpole Group, who support children and families living with diabetes in Stockport, Greater Manchester.

Trevor Bailey, chairperson of Stockport Georgians Cricket Club, said: “Rizwan was universally loved here at Georgians and in the wider cricketing community. He loved game of cricket and he loved Georgians.

“He played cricket the

Georgians Way – play to win, but with a smile on your face.

“His tragic death at the age of 38 was a shock to us all and it was important to the players that knew him that some good came from this terrible loss.”

The club raised £827.00 on the day through a raffle, donations and money raised through a BBQ with all produce kindly donated by club sponsor, J T Griffiths & Co.

Another sponsor, JBGass Solicitors, donated an additional £340.33.

Trevor added that the club had renamed their pavilion in Rizwan’s honour.

He said: “We have renamed our pavilion in Rizwan’s honour but we also wanted a celebration of Rizwan’s cricketing life.

“The Memorial Day enabled us to do this whilst raising some money for a cause that I’m sure would have met with Rizwan’s approval.

“It was an excellent day, attended by many people who had played with and against Rizwan over the years. It was lovely that his brother and his family were able to attend and they were touched by the turnout.

“We hope the donation we have been able to forward to the Tadpole Group will make a real difference for local children living with diabetes and look forward to helping the group in any way we can in the future.”
