Replacing my County fix with wry cup drama

- FAN’S VIEW IAN DOOLEY

WITH no game for County this weekend – due to Altrincham crying wolf – it was a case of trawling around the local clubs just to get our football fix.

There were a couple of local derbys, Cheadle Heath Nomads v Stockport Town or New Mills v Cheadle Town were interesting but the weather saw both called off before lunch.

As luck would have it, it was FA Cup weekend and there were games on the TV all weekend but to be honest I can’t get any enthusiasm for the likes of Millwall v Palace or Hull v Everton, I find it boring when there’s no one to root for.

After searching the internet and realising there were no live games I did find a couple of things that perked my interest.

Notts County had their game at Dover called off at 1.15pm, by which time most of their support would have been there.

The Dover chairman blamed the referee, the referee blamed Dover but the fact the away team and their support weren’t even informed that there was a pitch inspection is, in my mind, unforgivable.

I’ve no love for Notts but Dover, due to their attitude towards the rest of the division just adds to the call that they should be kicked out of the division, especially after their decision last season to stop playing!

Another thing that caught my eye and to be honest put a wry smile on my face was the predicament that Chester find themselves in.

Now we all know that they’re Welsh but now we’ve had it confirmed.

An edict from the Welsh government, backed by Flintshire Police has informed Chester that as their pitch is 100% in Wales, they have to play behind closed doors.

It seems odd, we’ve been to Chester so many times and as far as I know their games have always been policed by the Cheshire constabulary which would mean that they’re English.

Their supporters face the real possibility of watching the game on a big screen in the car park, which is on one side of the border while the game goes on, on the pitch on the other side, the comedy value won’t be lost if we ever have to play there again.

The Altrincham fiasco has carried on all week.

I said last week that I didn’t believe they’d called off the game for the right reasons.

During the week it was confirmed that they had two Covid cases, one of which has left the club but they’ve carried on training with the rest of their squad.

They also signed 3 players, (including Elliott Osbourne).

It’s obvious, in my eyes at least, that they just didn’t want to play us and would rather have had an extra week to prepare, for all the good it’ll do them!
