Meal deal shows we are serious about helping you

-

EARLIER this month, a Labour proposal was approved by Stockport Council which means that thousands more Stockport children could be eligible for free school meals.

It’s estimated that around 3,600 children will benefit from this scheme, which would come into effect from June this year.

I know that this decision will come as a massive relief to many families who are really struggling in these tough times. In essence, Stockport’s scheme extends the point at which children become eligible for Free School Meals and gives them at least £500 worth of support.

I’m really proud of the efforts that local councillors have put in to make this proposal a reality. Effective local government often requires determination, cross-party collaboration, and a tireless dedication to working in the best interests of the people you represent. Local Labour councillors who pushed hard for this scheme have shown those qualities in abundance.

Every day, I hear from constituents who are really struggling with the reality of financial uncertainty. While not a silver bullet, this proposal shows local councillors are serious about tackling the cost of living crisis.

It’s also worth reminding anyone who is reading this and feeling the squeeze that Stockport Council have an excellent ‘cost of living support page’ which can be accessed online. You can also call for help and advice by contacting Citizens Advice on 0808 278 7803. I look forward to continuing to work with local councillors to deliver for the people that we’re lucky enough to represent.

I’ll also keep holding the Government to account in Westminster and beyond, and fighting for a fair deal for people right across Stockport.

There’s no sugarcoating the situation we’re in, but there are brilliant people - some political representatives, others just generous friends and neighbours who are making a real difference.

A prime example of this is Re;Dish in Stockport, which runs a foodbank as well as various community initiatives to support local people.

I want to recognise and thank everyone who is doing their bit to help those in need. I hope that with a combination of local efforts and national action, we can see a brighter 2023.
