Indoor traders are in market for success
STOCKPORT Market was recently crowned Best Small Indoor Market 2023 at the Great British Market Awards.
This is excellent recognition of the hard work put into developing the market from the stall holders and traders.
As such, I have tabled an Early Day Motion in Parliament, acknowledging the award and recognising the significance of the Grade II-listed Covered Market Hall.
I know this is not the first time the market has been presented with an award and I certainly hope it isn’t the last.
●●Since the Conservatives came to power in 2010, thousands of bus routes have been scrapped, with more than one thousand scrapped in the last year alone. In Stockport, we know all too well the impact scrapped bus routes can have on our lives. I know, for example, that Councillors Louise Heywood and David Meller have been working hard to pressure the bus company to come up with a solution to problems with the 328 bus route in Edgeley.
In government, Labour will introduce new legislation to extend power and public control of local bus services to every area of England.
Currently, it can take years for local authorities - where permitted - to take control over bus services, but Labour will remove unnecessary hurdles that allow operators to stand in the way of change so that public money can be spent on delivering a better public transport network for all.
●●I recently had the opportunity to speak in a debate on Holocaust Memorial Day, where I was able to praise communal organisations here in Greater Manchester for the work they do in combatting antisemitism. Though we have come a long way since the horrors of the Holocaust, it is important to remember and reflect on the atrocities and the lives it took.
Last year, I had the privilege of listening to the testimony of Ike Alterman at the Yom Hashoah commemoration in Manchester. His story, of surviving in four concentration camps, was remarkable.
Here in Stockport, I was able to attend the Holocaust Memorial Day civic ceremony, organised by Councillor Dena Ryness and council staff. I am grateful to them for organising the event.
