‘Rough diamond’ Davenport can play part
COUNTY moved to strengthen the ranks at Edgeley Park again this week, securing the signing of former Manchester City midfielder Jacob Davenport until the end of the current campaign.
The 24-year-old holding midfielder has been training with The Hatters at their Carrington facility for the last month following his recent departure from League One outfit Lincoln City.
Davenport started in a behind-closed-doors friendly against a strong Everton side at Finch
Farm last week, impressing suitably for County to secure the midfielder on a shortterm deal.
Described by the club as an “energetic midfielder”, Davenport began his career in the academy at Manchester City before enjoying a loan spell with Burton Albion in the Championship, where he made 17 appearances for the Brewers in 2018.
At 19, Davenport made a move to Blackburn Rovers for an undisclosed fee, signing a four-yeardeal at Ewood Park.
Despite injury disrupting his first two seasons with the Championship club, he recovered to go on and make 36 appearances during his time there, the highlight of which saw him score a late equaliser against Brentford – his first and only Rovers goal.
That short spell with Lincoln City followed Davenport’s exit from Ewood Park over the summer, and it’s understood that the Hatters camp believe Davenport to be something of a ‘rough diamond’ who can play a big part in the club’s promotion push.
“Jacob is a talented player, brave with and without the ball who, after four years at Blackburn, has found himself in between things,” said Director of Football Simon Wilson.
“He has been with us the last couple of weeks so we could take a look at each other. The conversations have developed, and we have agreed on something short-term and mutually beneficial until the end of the season. Jacob adds further depth the holding midfield area and gives natural balance, being left footed.”
