Latecomer Robert takes up captaincy

- GOLF GEOFF GARNETT

MELLOR and Townscliffe Golf Club’s new Captain Robert Taylor is a relative newcomer to golf as he did not take it up until his 40s in 2009 and has enjoyed life at the club since then.

Robert said: “Mellor has stunning views, a great course well kept by the greens team with unrivalled greensand we have a returning hero in our pro Gary Brown, a dedicated, hardworking secretary in Karen Jones and excellent catering provided by Peruga.

“We also have a buggy track around the course allowing for 12 months golf and helping those unable to walk the 18 holes.

“We are an inclusive club open and welcoming to all.

“My best handicap was 14, now 17 and my favourite hole is the par five 15th, snakes left to right, trouble everywhere and a tough sloping green.

“My favourite course, other than Mellor is Vale do Lobo on the fabulous Algarve.

“My hobbies, (which only allow me to play golf once a week) are music, walking with the dog, eating out, socialising, reading and following Manchester United. My golfing highlights are too many to mention but just getting out there in the fresh air with Mellor’s stunning views is enough.

“My chosen charity to support in my Captain’s year is Prostate Cancer.

“Finally my chosen players to join me in a four-ball are Rory McIlroy – for a golf education, Peter Kay-for the humour and Sir Alex Ferguson for some great stories.”
