Royal partygoers to hit the streets

- NICK STATHAM

STOCKPORT is set to celebrate King Charles III coronation in style with street parties being held across the borough.

To date, patriotic residents have lodged nearly 70 applications for roadclosure street parties with the council.

Knees ups are taking place everywhere from the Heatons, Bramhall and Cheadle to Romiley, Offerton and Hazel Grove.

King Charles III’s coronation will take place on Saturday, with a service at Westminster Abbey.

For most it will be the first time they have witnessed the coronation of a British monarch - the late Queen Elizabeth II having been crowned nearly 70 years ago.

But it’s not just at street parties where the celebrations go with a swing.

Stockport has plenty of events lined up to mark the occasion.

The Mayor of Stockport is inviting all the borough’s residents to mark the Coronation of King Charles III with a special civic service at St Mary’s Church, in the Market Place.

It takes place on Sunday at 4pm and lasts for an hour.

The service is open to people of any faith. The nearest car parks are Churchgate and Newbridge Lane, but Merseyway/Redrock

is also an option.

Alternatively, all offstreet parking is charged on a Sunday between 6am - 6pm at 20p an hour.

Stockport libraries are hosting special events across the borough’s libraries during the week to celebrate The King’s Coronation.

A coronation-themed tea dance takes place at the Town Hall Ballroom between 1.30pm and 4pm next Wednesday.

Entry is £4.15 per person with an optional dress theme of red, white and blue.

The Town Hall will be lit red white and blue to commemorate the coronation. The council will also be flying the official coronation flag above the town hall over the weekend.

Residents with any questions about the events taking place in Stockport to celebrate the coronation should email kingscoronation@stockport.gov.uk
