Young’s century tops fine bow from Tearan

- CRICKET JOHN RICHARDS

FOR both the players and spectators of the Green, the weekend offered the first opportunity to view the club’s first overseas player for 27 years.

Tearan Gleeson had arrived during the week from Melbourne and in time for the clash against Warrington.

The Green travelled to Warington and on winning the toss the host skipper asked the Green to take first knock with Josh Hampson and Jake Skelton facing the opening attack of Umer Zeb and Ashley Scholes. Both batsmen were very watchful on a track that was, as expected, bowler friendly given the weather leading up to the game.

Scholes was the first to strike when he had Skelton

stumped by Patrick Tyrell for 8, 26-1, the anticipation became a reality as next to the crease was Gleeson.

As expected it took him some time to adapt to the playing conditions but it became obvious that he was an excellent find which was proven by a back foot pull for a six and two exquisite back foot foot drives for four. His partnership with Hampson blossomed with the latter showing some really excellent shots of his own with his signature flicks off his toes and square drives. The partnership came to an end when Hampson fell for 56 to a ball that stopped on him and he was caught McKintosh bowled Rudd, 117-2.

Enter skipper Elliot Young who, after a cursory look at the wicket and bowling, played an innings that everyone knew he was capable of.

He plundered the bowling for a series of pulls and straight drives which included nine fours and eight maximums.

This also allowed Gleeson to up his game and with the pair rotating the strike the run rate went off the scale.

Finally, with yet another maximum, Young raised his ton to a great celebration and when Gleeson was finally dismissed for 79 off just 83 balls with the score on 261-3 the Green declared.

Young’s ton had come in just 53 balls.

Next week the Green are at home to Kingsley wickets pitched 12 noon.

The 2nd XI had a similar result scoring 212-8 in their allotted overs with Tom Littler and Stuart Bisson Foster the main protagonists with innings in the 40s
