Passengers rushed to aid of child hit by bus

PASSENGERS rushed to help an injured child after they were hit by a bus on a busy main road in Stockport.

An air ambulance was called to the scene of the collision on the A6 (Buxton Road) shortly after 3pm on Monday, January 15.

Emergency services closed off the road in both directions as the child was rushed to hospital with ‘serious injuries’.

The Express understand­s the child, thought to have been a boy, did not suffer life-threatenin­g injuries in the crash.

The driver remained at the scene to assist with enquiries.

The incident is currently being investigat­ed by GMP’s Road Policing Unit.

No arrests have been made in connection with the collision, police have confirmed.

One passenger on the bus described the scenes after the child was hit, with those on board rushing off to help and calling the emergency services.

They said: “He must’ve been crossing the road or maybe he tripped, but we saw this kid dangerousl­y close to the bus.

“The next thing you know, there’s a thud and the bus stops.

“We see him and he’s in a bad state, on the floor and screaming.

“The people on the bus went to help him and call ambulances, then he was taken away.”

The A6 was closed for a number of hours on Monday evening after the collision.

The North West Ambulance Service confirmed they sent ambulance crew, a senior paramedic, a critical care paramedic and air ambulance to the scene.

The child was treated in the road before being rushed to hospital with ‘serious injuries’.

Stagecoach have since confirmed one of their services was involved in the incident and are ‘assisting police’ with enquiries.

A Stagecoach spokespers­on said: “We can confirm that a 192 service was involved in an incident at around 15:09 yesterday (15 January 2024) on the A6 in Stockport.

“Safety is of upmost importance to us and we have been assisting the police with their inquiries into this incident.”

A spokespers­on for Greater Manchester Police said on Monday: “At 3:12pm this afternoon (Monday 15 January 2024), officers were called to reports of a road traffic collision involving a pedestrian and a vehicle on Buxton Road in Stockport

“Emergency services attended the scene, and the victim was taken to hospital with serious injuries. The driver remains at the scene for further enquiries and road closures will remain in place.”
