County stay top despite call off

- SAM BYRNE

COUNTY’S trip to Notts County was postponed last weekend - although The Hatters would stay top of League Two as promotion rivals Wrexham slipped to a 1-0 defeat at Newport County on Saturday.

Dave Challinor’s side were due to take on The Magpies in what would have been new boss Stuart Maynard’s first game in charge of play-off hopefuls Notts.

But the cold weather felt across the country last week saw a number of fixtures postponed throughout the pyramid, with a frozen pitch at Meadow Lane seeing the clash shelved early on Saturday morning.

That meant Wrexham knew they would go top of the pile with a win at Welsh rivals Newport - but Phil Parkinson’s ten men would go on to suffer a 1-0 defeat after defender Will Boyle’s first-half red card.

Barrow’s first home defeat of the season, courtesy of a 1-3 reverse at the hands of in-form Crewe Alexandra, handed a further boost to Challinor’s men.

Results across the fourth tier mean the scenario at the top sees The Hatters two points clear of second-placed Wrexham, and more crucially, four points clear of fourthplaced Crewe with a game in hand – with the top three all automatically promoted from League Two come the end of the regular season.

Next up for County comes a trip to Doncaster Rovers this coming Saturday, with new additions Rico Richards and Rhys Bennett both in line for a Hatters debut, after the pair joined on respective loan deals from Aston Villa and Manchester United.

Attacking midfielder Richards and central defender Bennett, both twenty years old, have signed on temporary deals until the end of the current campaign from the Premier League outfits.
