Rivals failing to snatch our lead
ALL in all it turned out to be a fairly good weekend for County, even without kicking a ball.
The news that our game at Notts County was postponed at 8:30 left the cynic in me with questions – yes Mansfield was also off but in and around Nottinghamshire there were plenty of games on.
Did it have something to do with the Magpies’ new manager not having met let alone have a training session with his new team?
On the plus side it meant our players could have another weekend of rest and recuperation, it also gives Chally the chance to work with his new signings before they’re pressed into action and it gives the injured players another week of rehabilitation before they’re needed and, depending on when the games re-scheduled, another game to play in.
With the postponement, there was a real threat that we’d lose top spot but it seems our league position is leading a charmed life.
A few weeks ago both Mansfield and Wrexham had games in hand that, if won, would have seen us drop to third but it’s as if no one wants to overtake us!
Over the last five games Mansfield have lost one and drawn two, while Wrexham, over the same period have lost two, one of which was on Saturday at Newport County.
Are the planets aligning? Has lady luck decided it’s our season?
Whatever, the season is now in our own hands, keep winning and the league is ours, even with 19 games to go I’m feeling confident.
At least the game’s early postponement left time to find another local match.
There wasn’t much choice but there were games out there.
We decided on Stockport Town v Eccleshall, there was some County interest, Paul Turnbull and Jamie Vincent were still plying their trade along with a few of the County academy players and there was a pretty decent crowd, bolstered by a fair number of likeminded County faithful.
SSV was very cold but that 3G pitch was well worth the investment.
It was a good game, the Staffordshire club didn’t offer much while “Town” dominated the play and unsurprisingly won 4-0 (Pitbull scored the third with a thunderous header).
We, fingers crossed, are back on the road next Saturday when we visit Doncaster, it’s a game we should win especially with the new and returning players and of course the extra rest we’ve had.
